Where Do You Lose Weight First?

Mentally

LOL

I'm serious, though, Outlaws. Once you mentally commit to the process, envision yourself in your new lifestyle you’ll for sure start losing weight.

Unfortunately, you or I can't target fat burn specifically in any one area. Wouldn't it be cool if we could? Fat loss phases would be a breeze! I'd just say, "Let's do some lunges and trim these thunder thighs down a couple of inches."

I'm not mocking anyone; I have many members and students who ask the same question. Everyone wants to shed the fat from their legs and slim down. Catch me on the right day, and I'm with you! I get it. But all we can do is work on gaining muscle in a specific part of our body. Targeted fat loss?

It doesn't work that way. You can work out and focus on a particular area with tension, which may slightly increase fat burn in the surrounding muscular area, but it's minimal and not significant. I don't think it lasts long after your workout. So that's off the table.

So for now, we're stuck losing weight wherever it wants to come off, bit by bit. As with everything else we discuss, everybody has different bodies, and that means things may play out with slight variations.

Genetics can affect where fat is stored, so pay attention to your parents and grandparents. It's like seeing the future and understanding what does and doesn't work for your body.

Gender also plays a significant role. Men and women have different fat levels and needs for their bodies. The average woman has a higher body fat percentage than males, and that's normal and biological (think breasts and buttocks).

Lastly Age affects many body systems. Simply by aging, your body may store fat more easily due to changes in its natural processes.

These are the major factors that contribute to where weight may be stored or lost on our journeys. The more you know!

Remember, you can lose up to 0.5-2 pounds a week healthily through a caloric deficit, self-discipline, and your preferred type of exercise. If you can do those three things, you're 70% of the way there.

Get your heart rate up safely, incorporate responsible strength training, and manage your diet gradually and enjoyably. Once you get that snowball rolling and build consistency, you won't care about where you'll lose fat first.
